Grapplers have a prosperous weekend

Luna wins a Belt

The boys & girls varsity wrestling programs had a busy but successful weekend. Last Friday and Saturday three teams entered various tournaments. The girls competed at the 8th Annual Kusumoto Klassic at Prospect High School. The boys had a split squad with some wrestlers traveling to Temecula, CA for the Battle for the Belt and others at the 61st Jim Root Memorial also at Prospect High School.

Luna_MOne wrestler was able to bring a belt home. Matthew Luna (SR) won six matches, three by fall to win the 152lb weight class at the prestigious Battle for the Belt. Luna was the first Lancer in history to win this nationally know tournament. He is currently ranked #5 in all of California in his weight class.  Joseph Pulido (SR), Rowan Joseph (SO), Jayden Haygood (SO), Hunter Luna (FR) and Frank Riley (SR) all scored points in the tournament by combining for nine match victories for the Lancers.
 
Battle for the Belt - RESULTS
 
KusumotoGWRThe girls at the one-day Kusumoto Klassic brought hardware home back to Mountain View. The girls claimed the Championship trophy by earning 252.5 points, out pacing 2nd place James Logan HS by over 100 points. Eva Bhattacharya (SO), April Gao (JR), Katherine Love (SO), Diana Maldonado (JR) and Gabriella Celaya (JR) each earned top spot on the podium in their respectful weight classes. Hannah Hyun (FR), Jessica Sellers (JR), Nikki Kalina (SO), and Marina Garcia (JR) all also had a very fruitful tournament by finishing in the top three.

Makoa Tuitama (SR) and Mateo Jimenez (FR) earned 2nd and 3rd place medals respectfully at the Jim Root in San Jose. The Lancers were able to amass 97.5 points as a team and finish 6th out of 39 teams. Other point scorers on the day were Maverick McLean (SO), Wyatt Priest (SO), Ray Marin (SO), Jaxon Payer (JR), Adrian Li (JR), Jack Blatnik (SR), Uriel Lopez (FR), and Ricky Gaoteote (SO).
